302: Conferring and Questioning to Spark Deeper Understanding
Questioning has become one of the biggest challenges of teachers everywhere as they rise to the challenge of transforming their classrooms into communities of mathematicians. The CCSS Standards of Mathematical Practice require that children engage in problem solving with tenacity and confidence and that teachers foster a climate conducive to the generating of mathematics rather than the explanation of it. Teachers have been told that they have a new roleÑone of a facilitator, rather than a teller. But being a facilitator is not sufficient; we are also mentors. Precisely how to question in ways that engage learners to go deeper into the mathematics at hand will be the focus of this presentation. 400: Facilitating Meaningful Discourse in Mathematics Classroom
According to Principles to Action, mathematical discourse should: build on and honor studentsÕ thinking; provide students with the opportunity to share ideas, clarify understandings, and develop convincing arguments; and advance the mathematical learning of the whole class. It has been argued that Òdiscussions that focus on cognitively challenging mathematical tasks, namely those that promote thinking, reasoning, and problem solving, are a primary mechanism for promoting conceptual understanding of mathematics.Ò During the session participants will: 1) watch a video clip and discuss what the teacher does to support her students engagement in and understanding of mathematics; 2) discuss how the video exemplifies the focal teaching practice; and 3) consider what can be learned from this example that could apply to teaching more broadly. _x000B__x000B_EVALUATION POLL CODE:

402: Letting Go: Cultivating Agency and Authority in the Secondary Mathematics Classroom
In this session, I share what I learned from my dissertation video study of two high school teachers who were learning to enact Number Talks. I wanted to learn what the teachers found most challenging and how coaching supported their learning. _x000B_ In examining the videos of the Number Talks, I noticed that even when teachers use teaching strategies that are recommended for engaging students in productive mathematical discussions, it can be hard to let go of familiar practices that we think of as "teaching" (such as asking leading questions or verifying students' answers), but that when we are able to forego those habits, students' agency and authority has more space to grow. 601: Building a Coherent Teacher-Owned Middle School Curriculum
Illustrative Mathematics is writing a complete set of lesson plans, assessments, and differentiated learning supports for Grades 6Ð8 mathematics. The curriculum will be aligned to the Common Core State Standards, mathematically coherent, and attuned the daily classroom needs of teachers. It will be an open education resource released under a Creative Commons Attribution license, so that teachers will be able to adapt it to their local needs, while still preserving the basic architecture.
