Understanding what it means to have a balanced approach and the reality of implementing a balanced approach in a classroom are different. This presentation will briefly address the meaning of the elements of a balanced approach, conceptual understanding, application and procedural fluency, but the purpose of the session is to solidify what a balanced approach looks like in a Common Core classroom and to walk away with specific ideas to implement in a classroom to meet the needs of all students, including EL's. To accomplish this, participants will engage in center-type activities designed to address conceptual understanding, application, and procedural fluency while focusing on mathematical language and communication.. Discussions that keep in mind the “spirit of the standards” will culminate with the development of a sequence of the activities.
