CMC - South 2015 has ended
Welcome to California Mathematics Council - South’s 2015 Annual Conference Program!
This year’s conference is in Fabulous Palm Springs, Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7!
Please use this interface to navigate session.  You can search by speaker, grade span, strand, and strategies.
You can also create an account, upload your contact information and see speaker handouts.
Please note, adding a session to your schedule on this website does not guarantee a seat in the session.  All sessions are first-come, first-seated and all rooms are cleared between sessions.
Please watch this video tutorial on how to fill out conference evaluations.

404: Each Child is Mathematically Amazing: Learning From Students to Support Participation
Participants will learn about practices that (a) support students to explain their mathematical ideas and engage with others' mathematical ideas, (b) enable teachers to hear what the students say and (c) enable teachers to use what they hear to support learning. The session draws on Cognitively Guided Instruction research and makes use of a range of video examples of students, teachers and classrooms.

604: Balancing Conceptual Understanding Application and Procedural Fluency in a Common Core Classroom
Understanding what it means to have a balanced approach and the reality of implementing a balanced approach in a classroom are different. This presentation will briefly address the meaning of the elements of a balanced approach, conceptual understanding, application and procedural fluency, but the purpose of the session is to solidify what a balanced approach looks like in a Common Core classroom and to walk away with specific ideas to implement in a classroom to meet the needs of all students, including EL's. To accomplish this, participants will engage in center-type activities designed to address conceptual understanding, application, and procedural fluency while focusing on mathematical language and communication.. Discussions that keep in mind the “spirit of the standards” will culminate with the development of a sequence of the activities.

801: Sense Making? Aren’t We Already Doing That In Literacy?
The very first Mathematical Practice, "make sense of problems", includes many ideas that have long been foci of literacy instruction. Yet when “math” starts, both teachers and students often leave those good habits behind. We’ll look at examples of this and explore how to translate literacy routines into good mathematical practices.
